Taxes are all the rage with this round of elections. In my home state of Washington 100% of the Initiatives and Referendums are about how the state can raise money. From a biblical stand point the reason for the existence of the state is to provide for law and order and defend the people from outside threats, it is not the place of the state to provide for the peoples under its' protection, this is the role of the church.
The church, Biblically speaking, is the provider of both health and welfare of the people and should be the conscience of the state. Look around the country many hospitals were found not by the state but by church run organizations. During real times of need, in the past, the church is one to step up and provide for people. When the state begins to step into this arena money becomes wasted, but more than that the church loses a major area of outreach and has caused it to become complacent about reaching out to the "widow and orphan".
If the state is worried about budget short falls, which it should, it should return funding and management of health and welfare programs to the churches and once again focus on providing for the protection of it people from external and internal threats.
